A video trailer for my SnApp Shots book

I'm in love with my american publishers. The wonderful Chronicle Books based out of San Francisco. The other month they held a photo competition to get people talking about my SnApp Shots (How to take great photos with smartphones and apps) book and they have now used some of the images from that competition to crowd-source a video trailer for the book.

How cool is that!

A radio tour of the United States promoting the SnApp Shots book

Recently I've been doing a radio tour of the Untited States of America to promote my SnApp Shots book (how to take great photos with your phone and photography apps). I've been speaking to early morning commuters in Minnisota, Wisconsin, Texas, and New York. I've spooken to mid morning listeners in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Boston and New Hampshire. As well as drive time and early evening in Georgia, Iowa, Florida and nationally. Sometimes I've been speaking to over a MILLION people at a time! It's probably the biggest audience i've ever spoken to and I had to get on my 'radio personality' persona and be all hyped up for the American Audience. I've got a few more interviews to go, but all in all I will have spoken to almost 20 radio stations and several million people.

Both books have been going really well and have had great reviews by lots of different websites and magazines. Lo-Fi Photo Fun hasn't been released in the States yet (that's happening later in the year), but both are running low on stock on Amazon and Urban Outfitters have taken on both books.

Event / PR Photography for Ricardo

The other month I was asked by Ricardo, the multi-national enginering and technology company to photograph their Give and Gain day for them and for the press and their PR department. For those who don't know what the Give and Gain day is, it's a day when businesses all over the country volunteer time and resources to help the local community. In Ricardo's case they were holding an engineering challenge in a school and helping to redecorate two hostels.

I was asked to photograph the events which took place over three different locations, in Brighton, Worthing and Shoreham, Sussex and featured over 30 members of staff. The highlight of the day had to be when one of the Ricardo designed and build army vehicles, the Ocelot arrived at the school. The kids were just amazed at this mammoth of a truck.

Well done to all of those who took part in the event and helped to improve their community.

Contemporary Magazine Portraits

I was recently commissioned by a Sussex magazine (The Resident) to shoot some alternative / contemporary portraits. They contacted me as they were looking for some portraits that wouldn't be out of place in the sunday supliments from the Times and The Observer. The brief was to shoot a bar man from the Brighton Rocks pub before they opened and get some portaits for an article on a cocktail that they had produced. I didn't have long to shoot, only around 20 minutes and the barman Dan (who had never been photographed professionally) was setting up the pub, but he was brilliant and a natural in front of the camera.

We shot a few 'safer' portraits, and then pushed it a little by being a bit more creative with the framing. I also wanted to get a shot with lots of negative space incase the designer wanted to use that to add text on the page. While I was there I also got a few interior shots for the magazine, but the shoot for me was mainly about getting some quick and creative portraits using natural light and making them interesting enough to stand out on the page.

I'm pleased  to add  this quote from the client: "I absolutely love these. They are the best I have seen - I've been asking others to replicate the stylish shots you see in the Sunday supplements and, until now, no one has delivered the goods!"

Brighton Dome - Brighton SEO Conference

I was recently commissioned by the event team at Brighton Dome to shoot some event photography at the the Brighton SEO conference. Which is a one-day search marketing conference and series of training workshops held at the Dome. The event team were particularly interested in showing off how well the Dome can handle technology and conferences for a few upcoming articles in some trade magazines. The brief was to show that they can handle many people using laptops / iPads / phones etc. all accessing the Dome's wi-fi network at the same time, while showing aspects of the conference itself and the fabric of the building.

It was tricky working with the low light and that many people, but the client is very happy with the results and hopefully i'll be going back later in the year for the next conference for an idea that I've got for a very cool shot.

DC Storm - Company Profile Shots

I was asked by DC Storm (who supply award winning digital marketing technology and services to their clients) to produce some company profile shots of their management team. Working closely with their marketing director we came up with the idea and feel for the shoot to produce some portraits that were not like the typical corporate company headshots. We wanted to produce something a little cutting edge, with some personality that set them apart from other people in the industry.

We both set up a Pinterest board and looked to find images that would work for their company, so that come the day of the shoot we knew exactly what we wanted.

A massive thanks to the management team who really came on board with my way of working with my subjects to produce portraits that stand out from other corporate photographers. I know that it can be a bit daunting having your photo taken (sometimes for the first time) by a professional photographer with a big camera and surrounded by a whole lighting set up.  The feedback from the management team was that they are all over the moon with the images and that they all really enjoyed the process as well.

I ended up producing around four finished images for each subject. We went with a head on standard shot, a serious portrait shot looking out of the frame, a softer smiling / laughing portrait shot looking out of the frame and a portrait with a bit more personality. This will enable the marketing department to use the images for the website, printed material, blog posts, profile shots for conferences etc. Having the different styles of images will really help them tailor what they want to say for each message. We also shot them at their Brighton, Sussex offices to reduce the amount of disruption to their working day.
